As a manufacturer or importer of electric and electronic equipment it is essential to know whether your product is compatible with other electrical equipment. To ensure compatibility governments have introduced EMC standards and directives.

EU directive 89/336 sets the rules for all equipment and systems which use electricity – from battery operated products to high voltage installations. Some exceptions do exist for products which have their own EMC criteria.

The Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive – 2014/30/EU (Obsoleted directive: 2004/108/EC), ensures that electrical and electronic equipment will create a limited amount of RF interference so that other equipment is not affected.

Type Approval or Certificate of Conformity is granted to a product that meets a minimum set of regulatory, technical and safety requirements. Generally, type approval is required before a product is allowed to be sold in a particular country, so the requirements for a given product will vary around the world.

The Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is a special document, which the manufacturer signs to say that the product meets all of the requirements of the applicable directives. It must be issued by the manufacturer, or by the person placing the product on the EU market if the manufacturer is not based in Europe.

CE marking is a certification mark that indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that are manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA.
